We work every figure out twice, two different ways, and only publish it when both agree. Today they did not, so we would rather show you nothing than a number we cannot stand behind. The method and the caveats below are unchanged, and the figure normally returns within a day once the catalogue refreshes.

What this number is not
- Counted by catalogued name, which is how the objects are published. A Starlink satellite renamed upstream would drop out of this count.
- It includes satellites that are still raising orbit and ones that are drifting down to reentry, because both are still tracked.
- Around a hundred of the most recently catalogued Starlink objects have no operator attributed to them yet. They are counted here, because they are named Starlink and are in orbit, but they will not appear under SpaceX on the operator page until the next enrichment run reaches them.
How it is computed, and how it is checked
Active payloads whose catalogued name begins with STARLINK.
This one is not a recount. Counting Starlink a second way, by operator, cannot work as an equality, because the Dragon vehicles are SpaceX too and freshly catalogued Starlinks have no operator yet. What is checked instead is an attribution invariant: nothing named Starlink should be attributed to a different company. The exceptions are counted and disclosed, and the figure is withheld once they stop being exceptional.
